There is an old story about twins.
They were born together. They breathed the same air. They learned to walk in the same week. When one fell, the other felt it in their knee. They could finish each other's sentences before either had finished a thought. They were not two people who happened to be related. They were one consciousness in two bodies, and they knew it, and the knowing was the great love of their early lives.
Then one of them died.
It does not matter how. A fever. A fall. A war. The cause does not survive in memory the way the fact does — that one morning the other twin woke up and felt a silence in their body where their twin had been, and they understood, before anyone told them, that they were now alone in a way nobody else around them could understand.
They spent the rest of their life trying to find their twin in other people.
They talked too much. They read everything. They befriended strangers easily because the connection felt almost-but-not-quite. They could speak three languages by twenty and felt that none of them said what they meant. They could not stay in any one place for long because every place reminded them of where their twin was not.
The wound got handed down. Through bloodlines. Through soul-lines. Until you, in this lifetime, found yourself unable to sit in silence for very long. Found yourself reaching for the phone before you understood why. Found yourself, in moments of real intimacy, suddenly cracking a joke or changing the subject because something inside you remembered, without remembering, what happens when you love a person and they leave.
